Child Online Africa,one of the two Safer Internet Centres in Africa in collaboration, extends an invitation to you to participate in the Africa Safer Internet Day 2024 (ASID), a distinguished extension of the globally recognized Safer Internet Forum and the Safer Internet C+ (SIC+) program celebrated annually in February. #ASID is dedicated to advancing online safety initiatives and best practices for organizations operating beyond the European borders. Building upon the momentum of the Safer Internet Forum’s 2022 focus on Capacity Building and the 2023 theme of “Empowering the African Child on Safer Internet,” ASID is committed to fostering a safe internet ecosystem on the African continent.

To cultivate a digital environment in Africa that empowers individuals, particularly children and young people, by safeguarding their rights and promoting a safer online experience.

Objectives

Provide essential digital skills and literacy, especially to children and youth, enabling confident online navigation.
Advocate for and uphold the fundamental rights of internet users, focusing on children and vulnerable populations. Ensure a digital space that respects privacy, dignity, and freedom of expression.
Promote responsible and safe online behavior through awareness campaigns. Emphasize ethical conduct, cyber hygiene, and protection against cyber threats.
Collaborate with stakeholders to enrich and strengthen online safety policies. Ensure alignment with African values and offer comprehensive protection for users.

History

Each year on Safer Internet Day, millions of people join forces “Together for a better internet” to inspire positive change online, raise awareness of online safety issues, and participate in activities across the globe. Originating as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and adopted by the Insafe network in 2005, Safer Internet Day has evolved into a landmark event celebrated in approximately 200 countries and territories worldwide.
