Africa Safer Internet Day 2024
Child Online Africa, one of the two Safer Internet Centres in Africa in collaboration, extends an invitation to you to participate in the Africa Safer Internet Day 2024 (ASID), a distinguished extension of the globally recognized Safer Internet Forum and the Safer Internet C+ (SIC+) program celebrated annually in February. #ASID is dedicated to advancing online safety initiatives and best practices for organizations operating beyond the European borders. Building upon the momentum of the Safer Internet Forum’s 2022 focus on Capacity Building and the 2023 theme of “Empowering the African Child on Safer Internet,” ASID is committed to fostering a safe internet ecosystem on the African continent.
The foundation of ASID lies in World Telecommunication Conference Resolution 67, aligning its objectives with raising awareness, enhancing digital skills for youth, engaging the media ecosystem, and providing resources for parents, teachers, and caregivers. The European counterpart of ASID, celebrating its 20th anniversary, emphasizes the multistakeholder responsibility for online safety and advocates for legislation supporting child online safety in Africa.
Addressing challenges such as gender parity in internet access, ASID aims to swiftly create a safe internet ecosystem in Africa and enrich policies aligned with African values. In the ever-evolving digital age, creating a safe online environment is paramount for the growth and development of Africa’s digital society.
The theme for ASID 2024 is “Empowering Minds, Protecting Rights: Creating a Safer Digital Africa,” reflecting the continent’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a secure digital future. Child Online Africa, in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the ITU Regional Office in Africa, the African Telecommunications Union, and the Nigerian Communications Commission, plays a pivotal role in driving this initiative forward, working towards a safer and more secure digital space for all Africans.
